If you can’t get away for a leisurely walking holiday this October, why not get into the Halloween spirit and enjoy a scary walking experience in the UK? The UK is home to many supposedly haunted places and the county’s rich history means that there are often fascinating and grisly stories behind these hotspots of paranormal activity. From the eerie spaces of Dartmoor to the dark subterranean tunnels beneath Edinburgh, there are a large variety of haunted places to visit this Halloween. Below are a few examples:
This tour takes you into the most haunted section of the Vaults beneath Edinburgh, otherwise known as Edinburgh’s underground city. The vaults have a dark past, housing some of the poorest of Edinburgh’s population in squalid conditions. They are also rumoured to have been used for storing illegal and gruesome items such as bodies. The dark tunnels of the South Bridge vaults where this particular tour goes, are stalked by a malevolent entity.
The Cotswolds doesn’t immediately bring to mind images of haunted houses or ghostly happenings but many places in the region have a long and interesting history with many ghostly tales attached to them. It is home to the most haunted village in England – Prestbury – and it is possible to take a tour that takes in Prestbury, and the most haunted spots of the regency town of Cheltenham.
This walk, in Robins Hood’s Bay, a small fishing village within the North York Moors National Park, takes you on an atmospheric journey in the darkness, through alleys and lanes that are rarely seen by tourists. Lead by a ‘ghost-walker’ who will lead you by the light of his lantern and dressed in a top hat, you will discover the history that underlies the ghostly tales of this place.
The capital is of course home to many ghost tours due to its size and colourful history. This particular walk explores the areas involved in the infamous murders by the serial killer Jack the Ripper, around the district of Whitechapel in London. Exploring the old streets and historic sites associated with the case and taken around by expert guides you’ll be immersed in the mystery and gruesomeness of this story.
