It is now just 100km to Santiago – you need to walk all of this route to qualify for the ‘Compostela’.  The walk is through Galicia’s farmlands, forests and peaceful countryside until you reach your destination the beautiful city of Santiago de Compostela.

Stage 5 : Vilalba – Santiago de Compostela – 8 days / 7 nights / 6 days walk

 

Day 1 : Arrival Vilalba

The last 100km section of the Camino del Norte starts in the market town of Vilalba, in the heart of the Terra Chá or ‘flat lands’. Famous for its dairy production, make sure you taste Galicia’s speciality cheeses here and treat yourself to delicious home cooking before starting your journey.  Overnight Parador de Vilalba **** B&B

 

Day 2: Walk to Baamonde and transfert to Friol – 20km  5h | +160m / -200m

From Vilalba, the Camino del Norte takes walkers through the heart of the Terra Chá region of Galicia. Forest paths, small farming villages and lush countryside make most of today’s peaceful walk. In Baamonde, you will be picked up and taken to your accommodation for the night, a lovely rural property in Friol.  Dinner and overnight Rural Hotel Biterra

 

Day 3: Taxi Transfer to Baamonde and walk to Miraz – 15 km  

You will get a transfer from your accommodation back to Baamonde. Check out the medieval St James Church (Igrexa de Santiago) in Baamonde before you continue your journey across rural Galicia, following the Camino del Norte. Today is  an easy walking day. Return for dinner and overnight at  Rural Hotel Biterra

 

Day 4 : Transfert to Miraz and walk to Sobrado dos Monxes – 26 km

Day 5: Transfer to Sobrado dos Monxes and walk to Arzúa – 22 km  5h00 | + 220m / -320m

This morning you will be taken back to Sobrado dos Monxes to continue your Camino journey. Today you walk the last stretch of the Camino del Norte before it joins the most popular Camino trail, Camino Francés, in Arzúa. Prepare yourself to meet many pilgrims in this busy market town. Arzúa is famous for its local cheese so make sure you give it a try.  Dinner and overnight  Hotel Casa Teodora **

 

Day 6: Walk to Rúa – 20 km  4h30 | +371m / -460m

Walk will take you through pretty woods, sleepy villages and across streams most of the day. Make sure you visit the chapel of Santa Irene, with its unique statue of Santiago. You will stay the night in the hamlet of Rúa (310m).  Dinner and overnight Hotel O Pino **

 

Day 7: Walk to Santiago de Compostela – 20 km  5h | 4h | +296m / -306m

Set out early if you want to attend the pilgrim mass at the Cathedral at 12 noon.  Walk from the hamlet of Rúa to Lavacolla in the outskirts of Santiago, where pilgrims used to wash themselves in the river in preparation for their arrival in Santiago de Compostela.  Rows of tall eucalyptus trees line your journey to Monte do Gozo (‘Mount of Joy’ 368m) and it is from here that will catch your first glimpse of the Cathedral of Santiago. When you arrive in the city (264m, population 80,000), explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site architecture and delight in the wonderful atmosphere of this spiritual and cultural mecca. Overnight Hotel Hospederia San martin Pinairo *** B&B
