The Rota Vicentina is a stunning network of walking trails in southwest Portugal, weaving through the Alentejo and Algarve regions. It’s a dream for hikers who love coastal views, rural charm, and authentic Portuguese culture.

Walking the Rota Vicentina is like stepping into a living postcard — one painted with wind-sculpted cliffs, golden beaches, and the quiet rhythm of rural Portugal.

Each footfall carries you deeper into a landscape where time slows and nature speaks: the crash of Atlantic waves against rugged headlands, the scent of wild rosemary and rockrose, the distant call of seabirds wheeling over turquoise coves.

Whether you follow the Fishermen’s Trail along cliffside paths or meander inland through cork forests and sleepy villages on the Historical Way, the journey is rich with authenticity. You’ll pass whitewashed hamlets where locals greet you with a nod and a smile, stumble upon hidden chapels and ancient wells, and pause for picnics overlooking untouched coastline.

There’s a soulful simplicity to the Rota Vicentina — a sense that you’re not just walking through a place, but becoming part of it. The trail invites reflection, connection, and discovery. It’s not just a hike; it’s a slow dance with the land, a celebration of solitude and shared stories, a chance to feel the world breathe.

A notable waypoint for travellers since medieval times, it invites exploration with its cobbled streets, quiet squares, and enduring legacy as a passage for pilgrims and walkers. From its elevated vantage points, you’ll enjoy sweeping views across the town and towards the hill crowned by the castle and the city’s church — a striking silhouette against the horizon.

Day 2: Santiago to Vale Seco

DISTANCE: 20Km/12,5Miles; DURATION: 6h; CLIMB 456 M; DESCENT: 501 M;

Your adventure begins along the quiet contours of Alentejo’s inland coast, where the trail winds through serene forests and the distinctive montado — cork oak woodlands that shape the soul of this region.

As you walk, you’ll have the rare opportunity to observe these remarkable trees up close, their gnarled trunks and textured bark telling stories of centuries past. Keep an eye to the canopy too: the montado is a haven for birdlife, offering nesting grounds to species that thrive in its dappled shade and gentle rhythm.

Overnight: Vale Seco

Meals included: N/A. Breakfast is not included but the place offers the use of a kitchen, also with a small café 500 meters away.

Day 3: Vale Seco to Cercal do Alentejo

DISTANCE: 20Km/12,4Miles; DURATION: 5h; CLIMB 295M; DESCENT: 338M;

Day three immerses you in the quiet rhythms of rural life, as the trail meanders past working farms and cultivated fields, offering a glimpse into a slower, earthbound way of living.

You’ll walk through shaded forests, olive groves, and wide-open agricultural landscapes, crossing small dams and tranquil reservoirs that punctuate the terrain with moments of stillness.

Just before reaching Cercal, the path curves around the serene Campilhas dam — a picturesque spot to pause, cool off, and even enjoy a refreshing swim on warmer days. It’s a stretch that invites you to breathe deeply, take your time, and appreciate the land’s quiet generosity.

Overnight: Cercal do Alentejo

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: Cercal to Porto Côvo

DISTANCE: 17Km/10,5Miles; DURATION: 5h; CLIMB 289 M; DESCENT: 417 M;

Now the path begins its gentle descent toward the sea, marking the transition to the iconic Fishermen’s Trail.

The first few kilometres lead past small farms and lovingly tended gardens, where the scent of eucalyptus drifts through the air as you pass a nearby plantation. Soon, the landscape opens into flat cereal fields — a quiet signal that the coast is near. And then, like a promise, the first glimmers of blue appear on the horizon, beckoning you toward the Atlantic.

Overnight: Porto Covo

You can choose to follow the beach along firm sand or take a slightly more inland route through the dunes, each offering its own charm.

Along the way, you’ll encounter stunning beaches — some wild and deserted, perfect for quiet reflection or a peaceful pause. Near the end of the stage, the path brings you to the northern edge of Vila Nova de Milfontes, where a traditional fishing harbour adds a final touch of authenticity to this coastal journey

Day 6: Milfontes to Almograve

DISTANCE: 15Km/9,3Miles or 12Km/7,4Miles using the Ferry Boat option; DURATION: 5h; CLIMB 263 M; DESCENT: 283 M;

your journey begins with two charming options for crossing the river:

  • Option B: Cross via the bridge and follow the trail from its starting point.

Whichever route you choose, the day unfolds gently — a relaxed walk through open fields and low cliffs, with access to several inviting beaches as you head south toward Almograve.

Almograve is a lovely spot to pause for lunch and savour the local cuisine. Afterward, take time to explore Almograve Beach, where the Atlantic meets the land in quiet beauty. As Almograve is a small village, seasonal availability may mean we’ll arrange a transfer back to Vila Nova de Milfontes for your second night — no need to worry, we’ll take care of all the logistics.

Overnight: Almograve or Vila Nova de Milfontes (Almograve has limited options)

Day 7: Almograve to Zambujeira do Mar

DISTANCE: 21km/13Miles; DURATION: 6h; CLIMB 203 M; DESCENT: 193 M

Depending on where you’ve spent the night, the morning begins with a gentle reconnection to the trail:

  • From Vila Nova de Milfontes: A short transfer will bring you to Almograve to begin your walk.
  • From Longueira: You can rejoin the trail via a pleasant 20-minute stroll along the cycle path to Almograve. If you’d prefer to skip this segment, your accommodation host can easily arrange a taxi.

From Almograve, the route once again embraces the raw beauty of the Alentejo coast. You’ll pass the traditional fishing harbour of Entrada da Barca near Zambujeira, and walk alongside dramatic cliffs offering panoramic views — a prime spot to observe cliff-nesting storks in their natural habitat.

The small village of Cavaleiro makes a perfect rest stop, where you can pick up supplies and enjoy a hearty, homemade meal. From there, the trail leads west to the striking Cabo Sardão lighthouse, perched above the Atlantic. Your day ends in Zambujeira do Mar, home to one of Portugal’s most breathtaking urban beaches — a fitting finale to a day rich in coastal charm and quiet wonder.

But before reaching the border between regions, there’s much to savour along the way. Highlights include the serene Carvalhal Beach, once home to Portugal’s beloved fado singer Amália Rodrigues, and the locally renowned harbour of Azenha do Mar, where the scent of salt and grilled seafood fills the air.

After a well-earned pause at one of Azenha do Mar’s seafood restaurants — perfect for recharging with fresh, local flavours — you’ll have the energy to continue toward the Odeceixe River. This stage remains inside the protected natural park, featuring dramatic cliffs and a diverse undulating landscape. Expect approximately 7 hours of invigorating hiking through breathtaking scenery.

  • Salema to Luz Beach (12 km / 7.5 miles): A relaxed and pleasant walk in the Algarve region, following the picturesque fishermen’s trail of the Rota Vicentina. This easy-going stage takes only half a day to complete, leaving ample time to explore the charming village of Salema and enjoy the pristine beach scenery.

  • Luz Beach to Lagos (11 km / 6.8 miles): Another easy and enjoyable day of walking, this time leaving the natural park behind and heading toward the vibrant and historic city of Lagos, the largest city in the southwest. With plenty of time to explore the lively city center, you can also embark on exciting boat trips or simply soak in the inviting atmosphere.
