England - The Enchanting Lake District 2012

A self-guided walking tour of this magical part of England. Start at Windermere and finish at Keswick. The Lake District lies in the county of Cumbria, in England's north west corner. It is the largest of Britain's National Parks, and is famous throughout the world for its beautiful and dramatic scenery. The mountains rise from sea level to heights of over 3000 feet (almost 1000 metres), and are intersected by lush green valleys, watered by beautiful lakes. There is a wealth of history and heritage unrivalled in so small an area.

Option 1:
Superior B and B: £625 per person.
Dinner and B and B: £795 per person.
Accommodation in small hotels, inns and guest houses with en-suite facilities.

Option 2:
Standard B and B: £495 per person.
Guest houses, Bed and Breakfasts and farms. Normally shared bathrooms. Dinner not included but available within easy reach of accommodation.

Discount available if luggage not transported to Wasdale Head.

ITINERARY

 

Day 1: Arrive Windermere. Orientation meeting.


Day 2: Walk to Coniston via Hawkshead, with public transport available from Hawkshead if required (7 miles/12 kms to Hawkshead 11miles/18 kms to walk the whole route, with 350 or 500 metres of height gain respectively).


Day 3: Day in Coniston. Sightseeing or walking available.


Day 4: Walk to Eskdale via Seathwaite-in-Dunnerdale, where taxi rendezvous can be arranged if required (7.5 miles/13 kms to Seathwaite, 12 miles/20 kms to walk the whole route, with 600 or 800 metres respectively of height gain).


Day 5: Day in Eskdale. Sightseeing or walking available, including a chance to climb Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain.

Day 6: Walk to Wasdale Head (6 miles or 10 kms with 250 metres of height gain). 

Day 7: Walk to Lodore via Seatoller-in-Borrowdale, where public transport is available if required. At Lodore catch boat to Keswick. (6 miles/10 kms to Seatoller, 11 miles/18 kms to walk the whole route, with 500 or 700 metres respectively of height gain). Taxi service from Keswick to Windermere (pay locally).


DIFFICULTY OF WALK

Terrain and level of difficulty - moderate or strenuous according to participant's choice. On days when the walking distance would be more than 7 miles (11kms), and when no public transportation is available, a taxi rendezvous can be arranged at no additional cost, giving participants the choice of walking or driving the second half.

GROUP SIZE

This self-guided walking holiday can be operated for 2 or more people.

ACCOMMODATION

  • OPTION 1:

    First and last nights in comfortable hotel with guaranteed private facilities. Intermediate nights in small inns and guest houses. Dinner included if desired at half-board price.

  • OPTION 2:

    Guest houses, Bed & Breakfasts and farms. Normally shared bathrooms. Dinner not included but available within easy reach of accommodation.

GETTING THERE

AIR
The nearest airport is Manchester which is well served by international and domestic airlines.

RAIL
The nearest station is Windermere - 2 hours from Manchester, 4 hours from London.

WHAT TO TAKE:

Sturdy walking boots and walking socks (with achange of socks in rucksack), rucksack/day pack, 1 x water bottle with 1 litre capacity, insect repellent, sun glasses, sun hat, sunblock/cream, compass, torch, first-aid kit

WHEN TO GO

Mid-April to mid-September. Accommodation will be difficult to obtain on UK national holidays unless booked well in advance (and may require an alteration to the programme).

INSURANCE

We recommend that you take out appropriate holiday insurance covering you against illness, injury, and loss or damage to luggage. This insurance should also cover the possibility of your having to cancel your holiday for any reason.
