SARDINIA 2012 - THE COSTA VERDE
A self-guided walking holiday in southwest Sardinia

Amongst stunning Mediterranean scenery you walk at your own pace along picturesque wooded trails and remote mountain passes, with the sea always glistening in the distance. Walking through remote mining villages and along rugged coastlines to fishing villages, surrounded by emerald blue seas, two walks finish at the beach.

Our base for the first part of the week is a family-run ‘Agriturismo’ farm, producing wine, organic vegetables, cured meats and home made pasta.
Your second accommodation is a charming residence, with sun terraces overlooking uninterrupted coastal and hill views, and yet only a short from the magnificent sand dunes of Piscinas, one of the biggest in Europe, reaching up to 50 metres in places. Ghostly towns and ruins will surround you on your walk to the next accommodation. Heading up stream the landscape opens up to granite boulders and the summit of Mt Linas ahead of you. For your final day walk, a well beaten track past a goat farm and into the lower slopes of Mt Linas, you reach the sleepy village of Fluminimaggiore. Here the coast is again enchanting, and an ideal location for your rest day.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Cagliari airport, from where you will be transferred to your first accommodation. There you will be briefed on the trip. D

Day 2: Sanna Mines Loop - A gentle start to your holiday: setting off from La Miniera Fiorita, you follow old miners' trails past abandoned mine buildings and through lush vegetation. Plenty of time to explore the fascinating old zinc and lead mines - mineshafts with their original equipment, former factories and workers’ villages, all set amid lush Holm and cork-oak woods. It is likely that you will see some Sardinian deer and in the afternoon you can visit the museum in Montevecchio, a historical account of the mining tradition of this area.
(8 km/5 miles, 3 hrs) B,L,D

Day 3: Montevecchio to Piscinas - Head towards the coast on a gentle path through shrub among shepherd pastures, to reach the iron-coloured stream called the Riu Irvi. Finally come to the juniper covered sand dunes at Piscinas, stretching for miles along the coast. (17.5 km/10.9 miles, 5 hrs) B,L,D

Day 4: Rest day in Piscinas - a chance to relax or amble among the dunes and enjoy the sea. B,D

Day 5: Piscinas - Sibiri - Today you head inland, following a river upstream through a small canyon before rising though Mediterranean scrub to join a disused railway. You pass buildings which reflect the richness of industrial archaeology of this area: the Brassey washery, named after its English owner, the Viscount of Brassey; Pozzo Gal, a well preserved shaft recently opened as a multi-media museum. Pass through Ingurtosu Village, to follow a network of goat tracks to your next Agriturismo accommodation where a delightful meal awaits. (20 km/12.5 miles, 5.5 hrs) B,L,D

Day 6: Sibiria – Fluminimaggiore - walk on a path below Mt Linas, once the “smugglers way”, used by cattle thieves to transport stolen animals to the coast. The initial climb is gradual, following a tight valley and narrow stream, then walking through mountain pastures and meadows, finally reaching Planucheddu (630 metres) from where you will have a breathtaking view of the Sulcis Iglesiente range. Then descend to the sleepy town of Fluminimaggiore before heading to the coast along the fertile Flumini valley, past olive plantations and vineyards. Your next accommodation is not far from the the long and sandy beach of Portixeddu. (20 km/12.5 miles, 6 hrs) B,L,D

Day 7: Fluminimaggiore - Portixeddu - Today's walk leads you once again to the coast, with the long sandy beach at Portixeddu. You may take either the easy option along the beach to Buggerru, or follow paths along a rocky promontory to Capo Pecora (Sheep's Head) before returning to your accommodation.
