Salzburg & St. Jacob's Way - the Pilgrim Route 2010
A magical thousand-year old route. From boundary mark to boundary mark through the foothills of the Alps you walk on Salzburg’s Jacob’s Trail (St. James's Way), Rupert’s Winkl and past high mountains into the Alps. The former clerical state of Salzburg always welcomed pilgrims and treated them very well. Interesting ecclesiastical sites, charming countryside and impressive walks contribute to a relaxing and reviving self-guided walking holiday.
An introduction to the route will be given to you by our local representative in your hotel.

Day 1: Arrival at Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee.
Day 2: By train to Oberhofen – Eugendorf. By train you reach the border, where Salzburg’s Jacobs Trail starts. First you walk past soft green hills down to Lake Wallersee and then follow the path to Eugendorf. 23 kms/14.4 miles
Day 3: Eugendorf – Salzburg. Distant mountains greet the pilgrim and point to the destination. A comfortable walk brings you downhill to Salzburg, where a wealth of churches and ecclesiastical monuments wait to be discovered. A detour to Maria Plain, a baroque pilgrim church towering high over Salzburg is worth the effort. 14 kms/8.75 miles
Day 4: Salzburg – Großgmain/Bad Reichenhall. Across the city you walk into the direction of mount Untersberg. At the little town of Großgmain you cross the German border to Rupert’s Winkl and afterwards you reach the Bavarian salt metropolis, Bad Reichenhall. 18kms/11.25 miles
Day 5: Bad Reichenhall – Unken. Today you follow the river Saalach back into the area of Salzburg. Past Lake Salzachsee you walk deeper and deeper among mountains. The hiking path partly follows the river bank, sometimes wildly gushing through steep rock walls. 17 kms/10.6 miles
Day 6: Unken – Waidring/St. Ulrich. At first you follow the river Saalach into the widening valley around Lofer, a mountain village of great original charm. In front of you the steep Loferer Steinberge mountain range seems to scrape the sky. Cross via Strubpass into Tyrol. 26 kms/16.25 miles
Day 7: Waidring/St. Ulrich – St. Johann. According to the route you choose, on the dyke path, or past Lake Pillersee and St. Jacob’s church, to St. Johann. 16 kms/10 miles
Day 8 : Departure
DIFFICULTY OF WALK
Walk on quiet country roads, forest trails and walking trails. The'pre-alps' region around Salzburg is a lovely landscape of gentle hills, little farmhouses and very small villages, and lakes. Beyond Salzburg you are among the German mountains, following a river trail and walking over little passes. The daily walks are sometimes quite long (6 hours walking) but there are almost no significant ascents and some days are short enough to enable you to visit places of particular interest. Supermarkets en route allow you to buy lunches. Some experience of self-guided walking useful but there are plenty of possibilities to take the bus or train to shorten the walks.
GROUP SIZE
This self-guided walking holiday can be operated for 2 or more people.
If you have done this walk previously we would be interested in hearing of your personal highlights.
