A Ramble in the Everest Valley
From October to May we organise treks beneath the turquoise skies of Nepal. Our destination is the Everest region. We have designed a trek here that is more for the walker than the mountaineer. Compared to the usual Everest trek, this is an easy trek staying at a lower altitude, and well within the scope of any one who does a bit of walking. If you want an adventure and a glimpse of the biggest mountain in the world then this is the trek for you. From Kathmandu we fly up to Lukla, and begin our adventure landing at this tiny airstrip. The next few days are spent trekking through the Sagarmatha National Park, which is the heartland of the Sherpa people.
We will stay in lodges run by the Sherpas themselves, passing Buddhist monasteries with the views of Everest getting closer everyday. We will have a rest day in the village of Namche Bazaar, which will allow us to explore the region and to acclimatise. Our goal is the village of Tengpoche with its large Buddhist Monastery and magnificent views of Everest. We then return at a leisurely pace back to Namche Bazaar and Lukla for our flight back to Kathmandu.
The city of Kathmandu is an adventure all on its own. With a mix of Hindu and Buddhist culture the city vibrates with a riot of sounds and colours. You will notice as you explore the city, the deep-seated religious beliefs of these friendly people. On every street you will find a shrine or temple dedicated to different deities. The markets are a shopper's paradise with crafts and goods from all over Nepal and Asia. The two largest Buddhist temples are at Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, and in the month of February they celebrate Losar which is the Tibetan New Year, and from October on Buddhists from all over Nepal and Tibet gather to celebrate. We have included a guided tour to both these sights in our itinerary.
On our last night in Kathmandu we have included a special dinner at the famous Bhojan Griha restaurant with music and dance of various ethnic cultures. This 180-year-old building was once a residence of the Royal Priests. Our accommodation in Kathmandu is in the 4*Hotel Vaishali with breakfast included. When out on the trek we will be in mountain lodges, which are basic but comfortable. They usually consist of a large dining and rest room, and separate bedrooms with two single beds. We will provide you with three meals a day, which will be taken at the lodges. If you require any snacks or drinks between meals they are usually available along the trail.
The trek should pose no problems for the average walker but it is a good idea to prepare for the trek by doing regular exercise. While on trek all your kit will be carried by our porters - you will only have to carry a small daypack with your everyday needs.
