Istria - The Adriatic's Northern Pearl - 2008

History lives on this heart-shaped peninsula in the north of the Adriatic Sea. It has seen influences from Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, Germans and Slavs, Venetians, Austrians and Italians – each has left its traces, from pre-Christian mound settlements and antique amphitheatres and temples, to Byzantine mosaics, churches and sculptures in Romanesque and Gothic styles, as well as Renaissance and Baroque. Culinary influences from Italy and central Europe. Varying landscapes from quiet countryside and coast, plains and mountains, to Karst and dense forests. Charming Mediterranean-style coastal towns with archways, piazzas and fishing boats.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Individual arrival at Rovinj (or transfer from Trieste – price on request). Welcome and tour introduction.

Day 2: The Limski Canal. You start the day with a boat trip on the famous Limski Canal. You leave the boat and walk up to a little church, from where you have an impressive view of the canal. Walk past pretty, carefully decorated villages and walk along the old railway track from Kanfanar to Rovinj. Discover vineyards, wild juniper and fields with their old stonewalls and views across them to the steeples of Rovinj. Included is a visit to Mini Croatia Park as well as a guided city tour of Rovinj with a visit of the church of St. Euphemia.
21 kms/13 miles

Day 3: Rovinj – Barbariga. A coastal walk on tracks and paths.. Slightly hilly, through olive groves and shaded woodland, with many possibilities for a swim, and lots of inns along the way for refreshment. 18 kms/11.25 miles

Day 4: Barbariga – Fazana. Today’s walk is along the sea to Fazana. Every little piece of fertile ground is used for cultivation: vines, green peppers, olives, tomatoes and different fruits among them, including the plums used in the distillation of the local eau-de-vie named Sliwowitz. Visit Peroj, a little Istrian village with idyllic fishing houses, made from Karst stones and from there walk along the coast to the fishing village of Fazana. The village itself is very tranquil, and worth seeing is the church Sv. Kosma with a famous picture of the Last Communion, painted by Z. Ventura (1578). 15 kms/9.4 miles

Day 5: Brijuni National Park. Situated between Vodnjan and Pula, Fazana is on the doorstep of Brijuni national park, consisting of fourteen islands of various sizes, home to an extraordinary variety of species, including some seven hundred species of flowers, bushes and trees. The visit takes 4 hours including the boat trip and back. approx. 7 kms/4 miles

Day 6: Fazana – Pula. Today we follow the traces of the Romans to Pula. You will note a considerable change in the landscape, from the busier west coast to the quieter east coast. Pula itself is the biggest city in Istria, and its cultural, economic and unofficial political centre. At its heart is a welcoming old town with points of interest from different epochs. 19 kms/11.9 miles

Day 7: Individual departure.
