Italy 2008

Italy 2008 - THE AMALFI COAST

A self-guided walking holiday along one of the most spectacular coastlines in Europe

The Amalfi Coast, or the Costiera Amalfitana, has for long been considered one of the great scenic places in Italy and in Europe. To really enjoy it is no longer easily possible by car, as the traffic along the single coast road makes it all but impossible to find space or time to enjoy the view. But on foot you can enjoy this magnificent area in all its splendour. Seven nights with six days walking will take you to Ravello, Amalfi, Positano, Marina del Cantone, Capri and Sorrento.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive Naples. Transfer to Ravello, perched in the hills above the Mediterranean. A charming small southern town overlooking the coast, with a small network of ancient streets and fine piazza overlooked by the cathedral.

Day 2: An easy walk down to the coast to Amalfi via the little town of Atrani, where the sea almost laps against the town's piazza. On to historic Amalfi where you can spend a pleasant afternoon meandering its streets and enjoying its cafes. (1.5 hours walk).

Day 3: Transfer to the start of the Sentiero degli Dei ('Pathway of the Gods'), one of the finest walk in Europe, with magnificent views, towering cliffs and flower-filled slopes. Overnight Positano, whose Moorish-style houses  fall in tiers to the sea. (3-4.5 hours walking).

Day 4: Transfer and then another dramatic walk along the coast before walking inland through small villages to then finally descend to the tiny coastal village of Marina del Cantone for two nights. (3-5 hours walking)

Day 5: Free day for relaxing or strolling or use the day to go to Capri for a walking itinerary.

Day 6: Take the local bus up to Termini and then walk across country to Sorrento. Tremendous views of Capri en route before emerging at Sorrento for two nights. (3 to 4.5 hours walking).

Day 7: Free day (chance to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum or Vesuvius) or do the walking itinerary in Capri.
