This tour offers a comprehensive introduction to this varied, ancient and extraordinarily beautiful country.

This tour offers a comprehensive introduction to this varied, ancient and extraordinarily beautiful country. Traveling overland, you will visit the ancient capital at Karakorum followed by a wonderful 3-day walk in the legendary Orkhon valley visiting monasteries & meeting nomads along the way. Finally, visit the Hustai national park, where the world’s only remaining wild horse species, the Takhi (Przewalski Wild Horse) , grazes peacefully.

DAY 1. ARRIVAL IN ULAANBAATAR (ULAN BATOR), TOUR OF THE CITY, INCLUDING THE GANDAN MONASTERY AND NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The tour will include: the Gandan Monastery, housing a 26 metre gilded statue of the Buddha; the National Museum of Mongolia, which has a number of fascinating displays of traditional Mongolian clothing and weaponry, and exhibits charting the course of Genghis Khan’s empire; or the Natural History Museum with its extraordinary dinosaur exhibits; and the Bogd Khan’s Palace.

 

Ulaanbaatar
The city has changed locations more than twenty times over the past 350 years before taking root in its current location in a valley bounded by four sacred peaks, including Bogd Khan mountain. There are not many world capitals in which you can ride a horse, visit a nomadic family, and enjoy fine dining and spa treatments on the same day. The city has a close and occasionally amusing mixture of nomadic traditions and modern life, perhaps best summarized by her skyline dotted with both gers (felt tents) and skyscrapers. Dinner tonight.

 

DAY 2. AMARBAYASGALANT MONASTERY
Drive and visit the exotic Amarbayasgalant monastery, followed by hiking in the vicinity. Overnight in camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 

DAY 3. URAN TOGOO VOLCANO
Drive to the Uran Togoo Volcano in Bulgan Province and then hike around this extinct volcano and its crater. Explore the wildlife, fauna and flora of the area. Visit a nomad family. Overnight in camp.

 

DAY 4. HUVSGUL LAKE NATIONAL PARK
Transfer to the national park and take a boat tour on this beautiful lake, followed by a trek in the area. Overnight in tourist camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 

DAY 5. HUVSGUL LAKE NATIONAL PARK
Visit a local Tsaatan or reindeer family and see how they live. You may even ride a reindeer! Horse riding also available. Then, relax in beautiful natural surroundings. Overnight in camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 6. MURUN TOWN
Enjoy the lake by boat, or you can go kayaking. Then drive to Murun, the capital of Huvsul province.  Overnight in local hotel. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 7. HORGO NATIONAL PARK & TERKH WHITE LAKE
An opportunity to watch the birdlife on the lake and to hike along the lake shore. Overnight in tourist camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 8. HORGO NATIONAL PARK & TERKH WHITE LAKE
Hike to the extinct Horgo volcano crater.  Wonderful panorama over the landscape. Visits to Yellow Dog Cave, the Ice Cave and The Youth’s Cave.  Overnight in tourist camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 9. TSENKHER HOT SPRING
Drive to the hot springs, visiting the on the way the legendary Taikhar Rock and the Chuluut River Canyon. Bathe in spring water. Hike in the forest and enjoy the flora. Overnight in ger camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 10. KARAKORUM & ERDENEZUU MONASTERY
Drive to Karakorum. Visit the monastery and enjoy panoramic views over the site. Hike to the Orkhon River.  Overnight in ger camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 11. ONGI TEMPLE RUINS
Drive to the temple ruins. Visit the reconstructed main temple and the small ger museum. Hike to the ruins of an ancient stupa and in the general area. Overnight in ger camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 12. BAYANZAG
After our drive, visit the small palaentology museum, then walk at liberty among cliffs and forest, and even hunt for dinosaur eggs. Short, interesting film about the Roy Chapman’s expedition.  Overnight in ger camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 13. KHONGOR SAND DUNES
Drive to the dunes, visit a nomadic family and then a camel trek of about an hour among the dunes. Hike at liberty. Star gazing in the evening. Overnight in ger camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 14. SOUTH GOBI, YOLIN AM
Drive to Eagle Valley and the natural museum of the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Hike to glacier and wildlife viewing in Yolin Am.  Overnight in ger camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DAY 15. ULAAN BAATAR
Flight to Ulaan Baatar. Sightseeing, shopping and evening concert.

DAY 16. DEPARTURE. TRANSFER TO AIRPORT
