Lisbon Coast

The Arrabida Natural Park 2008

Thirty minutes south of Lisbon is the Arrabida Natural Park, encompassing the small range of limestone mountains, which stretch east-west along the coast between Sesimbra and Setubal. It was established to protect this wild and beautiful landscape and its rich variety of birds and wildlife.

This 4 night self-guided walking tour offers you a chance to capture the true essence of the region and can easily be combined with a visit to Lisbon. Your base is an Albergeria located in the heart of the historic centre of Setubal.

ITINERARY

 

Day 1 - arrival from Lisbon (30 minutes by express bus or we can organise a personal transfer).

Day 2 - Alto da Madelana, a circular walk starting from the historical village of Villa Nogueira de Azeitao. The walk takes you through the Alto da Madelana to the woodlands along the margins of the Sierra da Arrabida before coming back through heath land. This is a great introduction to the area.
Walking time about 3½ hours.

Day 3 - The Windmills of Palmela - this walk begins and ends in the town of Palmela, famed for its castle, there will be plenty of time to visit the town and castle at the end of the walk. The route will take you along the Serra do Louro ridge, which is lined with windmills before returning via the village of Quinta do Anjo. Besides magnificent scenery with an interesting variety of flora and fauna you will pass the archaeological excavations of the Castelo Chibanes fort and on the edge of the village the Neolithic sepulchres hewn out of the local rock.
Walking time about 4 hours.

Day 4 - Serra de S. Luis and the Alcube river valley - this circular walk will take you around the magnificent S. Luis Mountain before dropping down to walk along the Alcube valley. The whole area is quite remote and there is every chance that you will see the rare birds and wild cats that the area is famous for!
Walking time 4 hours.

Day 5 - Departure after breakfast.

DIFFICULTY OF WALK

Moderate walking, most walks involve some climbs but they are worth it!. This walking tour can start on any day of the week to suit personal travel arrangements.

Family run hotel in the historic centre of  Setubal - all rooms with private facilities.

GETTING THERE

Flight to Lisbon, bus from Lisbon to Setubal.

WHAT TO TAKE:

Sturdy walking boots and walking socks (with a change of socks in rucksack), rucksack/day pack, swimming costume, water bottle, insect repellent, sun glasses, sun hat, sun block/cream, compass, torch and a first-aid kit.
