Portugal

The Montesinho Natural Park 2008

The park is in the heart of the region known as Tras-os-Montes ('behind the mountains'), a perfect description for a region that is backward and unspoilt in almost every respect. Bleak mountains rise to 1,481 metres above heather and broom, descending to oak and chestnut forests and valleys of alder and willow. The area offers the walker stunning scenery, silence, wonderful wildlife, including the Iberian wolf and the Spanish Imperial Eagle, and tiny mountain villages where mules plough fields and ancient practices such as herbal cures and reverence for the supernatural linger. The historic town of Bragança with its walled citadel and medieval quarter sits on its doorstep.
