Madeira (and its neighbour Porto Santo), were called by the first visitors the 'Fortunate Island', and they are indeed blessed - a year round climate that hardly varies (averaging about 21 degrees celcius), spectacular scenery, beautiful flowers and enchanting gardens. This guided walking holiday is a wonderful way to discover Madeira. Effectively, this is a holiday with your own guide and transport. Just tell us the date that suits you and we will, subject to guide and accommodation availability, book your private guided walking holiday.

Day 1: Transfer from airport to hotel for 2 night stay at Encumeada, in the centre of the island, among hills and mountains.
Day 2: A spectacular walking day of luxuriant vegetation and wonderful views, taking in Lombo do Moiro, Bica da Cana, Caramujo, and Casa da Levada.
Difficulty grade: 2-3 (see below)
Day 3: Today's walk will be the exploration of the beautiful Planate of Paul da Serra, Rabacal and the Twenty-five Waterfalls. Transfer to Santa, near Porto Moniz, with its seawater rock pools, for 1 night. Dinner in seaside restaurant.
Difficulty grade 2/3
Day 4: A wonderful walk starting at the apple orchards of Faja da Ovelha, descending to the fishing village of Paul Mar. Then climb to Prazeres village, from where there are spectacular views of terraced cliffs, before returning to the coast. A walk with breathtaking views of the blue Atlantic breakers.
Difficulty grade: 2-3
Day 5: The Gardens of the South Coast. Walk from Prazeres to Calheta along the Levadas, passing through banana and sugar cane plantations in the south coast area. These are fairly easy walks with yet more wonderful views. Overnight Ribeira-Brava.

Day 6: The last walking programme of the week will take you through the luxuriant island centre, with its beautiful valley vistas and views across mountains and distant plantations. Transfer to Funchal for 2 nights.
Difficulty grade: 2-3
Day 7: Day free in the capital, Funchal. Dinner.
Day 8: Departure
DIFFICULTY OF WALK
Grade 2 - Smooth paths, almost flat, recommended for all ages and walkers.
Grade 3 - Paths with some difficulty, sometimes strenuous.
Grade 4 -The top difficulty grade in Madeira, but which does not feature in our programmes.

GETTING THERE
Airport in Funchal - many direct flights but sometimes necessary to change in Lisbon.
WHAT TO TAKE:
Sturdy walking boots and walking socks (with a change of socks in rucksack), rucksack/day pack, 1 x water bottle with 1 litre capacity, insect repellent, sun glasses, sun hat, sun block/cream, compass, torch, first-aid kit, mobile phone, rainproof, swimming costume and a fleece.
WHEN TO GO
All year except over the Christmas and New Year period.
INSURANCE
We recommend that you take out appropriate holiday insurance covering you
against illness, injury, and loss or damage to luggage. This insurance
should also cover the possibility of your having to cancel your holiday
for whatever reason.
