ITINERARY

Day 1 - Arrive Mâcon, located on the banks of the Saone. Your 2* hotel is close to the old centre. Dinner in a nearby restaurant.

Day 2 - Mâcon to Grange du Bois. Pass through the region known as the Mâconnais, the southernmost and the largest of the Burgundy wine areas. A tasting is possible at Davaye before the famous rocky outcrops of Solutre and Vergisson. Overnight in comfortable 'chambre d'hote' with dinner (or in a nearby restaurant).

Day 3 - Grange du Bois to Bussières. To begin, a hilly walk, followed by a harmonious medley of vineyards, woods and meadows. Then come to the Château of Pierreclos, an imposing pile dating back to the 15th century. Visit and wine tasting before continuing on to the attractive village of Milly Lamartine, birthplace of the great poet, Lamartine. Continue to Bussieres for overnight in 'chambre d'hote' and dinner at home.

Day 4 - Bussières to Cluny. Pass the Chapelle des Moines, and then the magnificent 14th century chateau/fortress of Berzé-le-Châtel, set on a hill in a valley, offering one of the finest panoramas in France. Continue to the histric town of Cluny for overnight in 'chambre d'hote' with dinner in nearby restaurant.

Optional second day/night in Cluny.

It is worth considering an extra day in order to fully explore this beautiful and fascinating town. The former Benedictine abbey was until the Revolution almost as influential as the papacy - the remains of the huge abbey, the old town with its medieval streets of Romanesque houses can absorb several hours. There is also the possibility of a short circular walk in the surrounding countryside, whilst a wine tasting in the old town is highly recommended.

Day 5 - Cluny to Cormatin

Two possibilities:

  • The Green Road, short and direct, taking you to Cormatin in about 3 hours and passing several pretty villages
  • The Grison Valley, via Blanot (superb Romanesque priory, traditional galleried houses). Woodland and vineyards, possible detour via Mont Saint Romain and its magnificent 360 ° panorama.

Cormatin has an elegant Renaissance château and park (guided visit strongly recommended). Overnight in 'chambre d'hote' with dinner in nearby restaurant.

Day 6 - Cormatin to Brançion. Pass through Chapaize, with its church renowned for its bell tower, a jewel of Romanesque art and its beautiful Maconais houses. Then the hamlet of Lancharre and the village of La Chapelle sous Brançion. Finally, the medieval perched village of Brancion, protected by its château. Overnight in 'chambre d'hôte' at Martailly or in an inn at Brançion.

Day 7 - Brançion to Tournus. You will come to the villages of Royer and Ozenay with their Romanesques churches and their vineyards. Arrive in Tournus, a Romanesque town famous for the magnificent abbey of St-Philibert). A different wine region and so a wine tasting in one of the town's cellars is to be recommended. Overnight in chambre d'hote or inn, and dinner.

Day 8 - Depart after breakfast. (Return to Mâcon or Lyon possible by direct train).
